Summary of clinical application of ozone

Ozone development
Ozone therapy is currently one of the rapidly developing clinical technologies. As early as during the First World War, Germans used ozone to treat gas gangrene caused by anaerobic infection. In the 1970s, with the deepening of medical basic theory research, the mechanism of ozone's action gradually became clear. The first person to make outstanding contributions to this is Professor Bocci, Velio Bocci is a professor of science at Siema University in Italy. His book "Oxygen Ozone Therapy" systematically introduces the physicochemical properties and clinical applications of ozone. In 1937, P. Aubourg applied ozone rectal gas injection method to treat enteritis and colitis; In 1958, Joachin Aansler applied the first ozone concentration meter that could be accurately controlledOzone therapy deviceIn 1968, Hans Wolff developed the Ozone Autologous Blood Therapy (O3-AHT), which was considered the beginning of true ozone therapy; On March 11-13, 1999, the International Conference on Ozone Therapy was held at the GlaxoSmithKline Research Center in Verona. In 2000, Professor He Xiaofeng from Guangzhou Southern Hospital was the first to carry out ozone therapy for lumbar disc herniation in China. By September 2008, more than 2000 patients had been treated with an effective rate of 82.5%. In recent years, there have been many reports on ozone therapy in China. Since 2004, with the concept of evidence-based clinical practice, medical ozone has been used to do a lot of clinical treatment. The patients who have been treated include cardiovascular disease, cerebrovascular disease, diabetes, atherosclerosis, deep vein embolism of lower limbs, psoriasis, herpes zoster and postnatal neuralgia, ankylosing spondylitis, rheumatoid arthritis, ulcerative colitis, femoral head necrosis, iatrogenic discitis, lumbar disc herniation, cervical spondylosis, osteoporosis, osteoarthritis and senile eczema. Based on clinical diagnosis and treatment experience, five medical functions, eight treatment techniques, and fourteen application pathways of ozone therapy have been summarized.

Five major medical functions
1. Improve tissue ischemia and promote circulatory function:
In practice, it has been proven that the greatest benefit of ozone in clinical treatment is tissue ischemic diseases. Professor Bocci provides a detailed analysis of the ozone response of red blood cells in Chapter 14 of his book "Oxygen Ozone Therapy," titled "How the intracellular environment changes after blood sampling. After ozone dissolves in plasma, it produces hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) and lipid peroxidation products, most of which can interact with cell receptors, cell membranes, and cytoplasm. Even the nuclear groups interact with each other separately. After ozone treatment and reinfusion, autologous blood undergoes a slight peroxidation reaction on the red blood cell membrane, which enhances the plasticity and permeability of the cell membrane. In addition, the negative charge on the membrane surface increases, the aggregation of red blood cells decreases, the sedimentation rate of red blood cells also decreases, the viscosity of plasma decreases, and the fluidity of blood is relatively improved. 21 patients with intervertebral disc infection were treated with clinical ozone therapy, which involved the combination of ozone autologous blood diagnosis and treatment with high concentration ozone injection into the disc. Four patients were analyzed for changes in erythrocyte sedimentation rate, and each patient showed significant improvement in symptoms after four ozone treatments (once every 2 days), with an average erythrocyte sedimentation rate reduced by 60% (see Table 1).
Table 1
Blood sedimentation rate (%) of intervertebral disc infection patients before O3 treatment and after O3 treatment
Male 36 years old, 96mm/h, 26mm/h, 72%
Male 45 years old, 70 mm/h, 30 mm/h, 57%
Female, 54 years old, 80 mm/h 34 mm/h 57%
Ding male 70 years old 65 mm/h 28 mm/h 56%
2. Immune regulatory function: Ozone entering the bloodstream can increase the content of 2,3-DPG in red blood cells, shift the hemoglobin oxygen dissociation curve to the right, and increase the release of oxygen from the blood to tissues. Therefore, it can effectively improve tissue ischemia. Ozone can stimulate endothelial cells to release nitric oxide (NO). Endogenous NO can directly cause vasodilation and inhibit platelet adhesion and aggregation on the surface of endothelial cells. Ozone oxidizes low-density lipoprotein (LDL), which is known as a risk factor for atherosclerosis. Through therapeutic LDL analysis of 130 patients with coronary heart disease, an average reduction of 19.6% in LDL was observed after 15 treatments with O3-AHT. Relevant foreign reports analyzed an average reduction of 19.8% in LDL. Currently, ozone therapy is the preferred treatment for coronary heart disease and ischemic tissue diseases.
Practice has proven that ozone can induce interferon gamma, interferon beta, and interleukin-2 in the blood. The production of interleukin-6, interleukin-8, tumor necrosis factor - α (TNF - α), transforming growth factor - β (TGF - β), and granulocyte monocyte colony-stimulating factor. Ozone autologous blood therapy can enhance immune suppression and regulatory effects. Therefore, it can treat many immune related diseases. We have carried out psoriasis treatment in clinical practice, currently treating 67 patients. 76% (50 cases) of patients have not developed the disease for more than two years, and 51 cases of ankylosing spondylitis have been treated. After completing the treatment course, consolidation therapy is given five times a year. 80% (49 cases) of patients have not developed the disease for more than three years. We have also carried out treatment for rheumatoid arthritis.
3. Promote metabolic function
Ozone can promote the rate of glycolysis in red blood cells. We conducted therapeutic research on diabetes. At present, 31 patients with diabetes have been treated. After three courses of treatment, all patients stopped the traditional drug treatment, and the complications were significantly improved.
4. Functions such as anti-inflammatory and anti sensory effects
Ozone is a strong oxidant that has a strong killing effect on various bacteria and viruses. We used ozone to treat 21 cases of iatrogenic intervertebral disc inflammation. The combination of ozone autologous blood and local injection achieved a 100% cure rate within the middle course of treatment.
5. Analgesic function
The mechanism of ozone therapy for pain is not fully understood, and it is currently believed to be related to the following mechanisms:
1) Oxidative pain factors.
2) Improve circulation and eliminate aseptic inflammation.
3) The role of "chemical acupuncture and moxibustion"
We have carried out the treatment of herpes zoster and postherpetic neuralgia in clinical practice, with a total of 201 patients cured. Ozone therapy in the acute phase not only provides pain relief but also cures without leaving any sequelae. Before ozone therapy, the medical community had almost done nothing to treat postherpetic neuralgia. We used a combination of ozone autologous blood therapy and local injection to cure 13 cases of postherpetic neuralgia for more than three years.

Eight treatment techniques
1. Ozone autologous blood therapy (03-AHT)
Ozone autologous blood therapy is the most widely used method in our clinical therapeutic research. In practice, this method can be summarized as
1) The small course of treatment is 5 times, depending on the type of treatment, it can be once every other day, twice a week, or once a week.
2) The middle course of treatment is 10 times, and depending on the condition, it can be done once every other day or twice a week.
3) The major treatment course consists of 15 or more sessions, with 3 sessions per week in the first week and 2 sessions per week starting from the second week.
The concentration of ozone therapy is determined based on the disease type, condition, and TAS value, but each treatment requires an increase of 5mg/ml
2. Small Self Blood Therapy
Extract 5-10ml of autologous venous blood and mix it with an equal amount of ozone in a syringe before intramuscular injection.
3. Ozone rectal injection method (RI)
Ozone rectal gas injection is a simple, inexpensive, non-invasive and effective treatment method. Many immune diseases can be treated with this method.
4. Ozone intervention therapy
Ozone intervention therapy is divided into two types: vascular and non vascular. Currently, vascular intervention therapy mainly treats patients with femoral head necrosis and cerebral infarction. Non vascular intervention therapy mainly treats cervical disc herniation and lumbar disc herniation.
5. Ozone water therapy
The treatment of gynecological diseases, chemical acupuncture and moxibustion, wound washing and oral ulcer can be carried out by mixing double distilled water and ozone.
6. Ozone oil therapy (including ozone whole milk therapy)
Ozone oil therapy mainly uses a mixture of olive oil and ozone to treat diseases.
7. Ozone sauna therapy
First, introduce steam at around 70 ℃ into a dedicated container, with the head outside the container. After steaming for 20 minutes, ozone gas is introduced. This method is a non-invasive treatment that is valuable in the treatment of skin diseases and many immune related diseases.
8. Ozone local injection method
Ozone can be directly injected into joints, around joints, and within lesions.
The above 8 technologies can be used separately or in combination according to different conditions and diseases.

Fourteen application pathways
1. Intravenous ozone autologous blood transfusion
2. Intra arterial ozone catheter intervention therapy
3. Intramuscular - ozone small self blood or direct injection of gas
4. Subcutaneous - Ozone water or ozone gas can be directly injected subcutaneously
5. Intraperitoneal - Ozone gas can be injected intraperitoneally
6. Pleural purulent pleurisy can be treated by placing a tube and rinsing with ozone water before injecting ozone gas.
7. Direct injection of air into soft tissues within and around joints
8. Intradiscal - Intradiscal injection of ozone gas
9. Intraforaminal injection of ozone gas into the intervertebral foramen
10. Localized inflammation within the lesion
11. Direct injection of ozone gas into the rectum is an effective method for treating ulcerative proctitis.
12. Vagina - available with ozone water and ozone gas
13. Skin - can use steam method, ozone oil method
14. Nasal cavity - direct gas injection when the patient holds their breath
After more than 10 years of clinical application research, it is believed that ozone therapy has great development prospects: due to its simple method, low cost, obvious therapeutic effect, and the ability to treat diseases and maintain health without disease.
